Testing Out an Arduino

So I pulled out the Arduino and I have an Uno R3. I was looking at the tutorials on the site and some data sheets and it's as user friendly as I remember. Downloading the IDE to use with Fedora Linux was a snap.
I copied their program to blink the led and got it working in minutes, and then I tried to make a more complicated serial port loopback program.
I feel like I made it more complicated than it should have been. I had to make some char buffer to hold characters and then prints back to the serial port monitor only when a newline is detected.
I bought an RFID shield plus an RFID card and fob to mess around with. They're coming through economy shipping, so I guess I'll see them in two weeks.
This Thought is part of RFID Door Unlocker
You know how nice cars like Mercedes or Tesla automatically unlock when you get close to them with the key fob? Let's do that but for my apartment front door.
